Lookout Mountain

One place I like to go outside of town is Lookout Mountain. You can get some great views of the city and surroundings (duh!). Attractions at the top include the Lookout Mountain Nature Center, the Boettcher Mansion, the grave of Buffalo Bill, and a plethora of hiking and biking trails. Tim and I drove up there Sunday afternoon. Right away, we saw some paragliders...

There were a couple of little gliders that appeared to be radio-controlled. For this next picture, I made a composite of 12 separate shots taken over the space of a few seconds, then used cues from the ground to align them relative to each other.

Along the Lariat Loop Road, you pass right by this giant "M" that's visible for miles around. It's much easier to reach than another M Mountain I remember from my past. Back in the late 1980s, a team from New Mexico Tech came here and placed a giant "N" and "T" on either side of it, as a prank on the rival Colorado School of Mines. Because no one from CSM cared enough to devise any counter-prank, the same NMT team carried out one of their own, draping the exterior of our performing arts center with giant paper letters "C", "S", and "M".

We parked very close to the Buffalo Bill grave, but instead of going there we took a trail up to the Lookout Mountain Nature Center. Some views along the way:

Inside the center, we saw these scary animals! But they were all taxidermed:

But this woodpecker was the real deal. We saw him on the way back down the trail.

My next entry will be a little more... indoors. One of the most fabulous pop music acts is coming to Denver tomorrow night!
